Cottage Project Update: A Journey in Vienna’s Grinzing
Welcome back to the Grace & Holmes blog! It’s been an exciting few months, and I’m thrilled to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the progress of my cottage project in the heart of Vienna’s charming Grinzing. With a summer start and now about 75% complete, I wanted to share some of the design choices and creative updates that are transforming this once-empty space into a cosy, multifunctional retreat. In my latest newsletter, I mentioned two of the themed rooms, but now let's take a deeper dive.
Designing for Functionality and Style
Given that the cottage is a small, multifunctional space, my first task was to design a practical layout. The challenge was to maximise functionality without overcrowding the rooms. I wanted to maintain an airy and open feel, while also ensuring it was versatile enough to accommodate work, relaxation, and entertaining.
Kitchen-Lounge Combo: Green and Gold Accents
The heart of the home is always the kitchen, but in this project, it’s even more special as it blends seamlessly into the lounge. The kitchen area itself was tricky, as storage and worktop space were limited. I needed to get creative. After researching and measuring (several times!), I finally found the perfect solution: an integrated kitchen island that ticks all the boxes. This piece is multifunctional—offering storage, a workspace, and seating for 4-6 people. The best part? It doubles as a bar area and even has space for a decorative vase of flowers. Now, I can entertain guests, cook, and work—all in one spot.
For the lounge, I leaned into a rich green theme with a lush velvet sofa that doubles as a sofa bed. This ensures I have plenty of room for overnight guests. To complement the sofa, I added touches of gold—think a vintage carpet in golden hues and matching cushions to bring warmth to the space. Dark green bookcases on either side of the sofa serve dual purposes, providing storage and acting as side tables where guests can place their coffee or tea. With no need for a bulky coffee table, the space stays open and uncluttered.
Near the window, I couldn’t resist adding a green velvet armchair with a matching stool—a cosy reading nook that also provides extra seating for guests. All that's left is to decide on the perfect curtains and lighting. I’m torn between a funky stork wall light for a playful touch or a classic chandelier to add a bit of vintage elegance. What would you suggest?
To tie the space together, I’m planning to complete the lounge with a garden-themed mural behind the sofa, bringing in a touch of nature to complement the rich greens.
A Practical Yet Magical Hallway
The hallway in a small cottage is often overlooked, but not here! I wanted to make it as practical as it is inviting. A slim-fitted shoe cabinet keeps things neat, while a bamboo bench provides a convenient spot to sit while putting on shoes. However, the magic lies in the details. I’m planning to turn this hallway into a statement entryway with a playful 'Giraffe Loves wall' lamp and vintage posters in bright colours. The rainbow doormat is already in place, setting a joyful tone the moment you walk in the door.
Bedroom: A Cloud-Like Escape
The bedroom has a calm, ethereal theme. I opted for shades of blue to create a peaceful, cloud-like sanctuary. We’ve installed a stunning blue mural and chosen a plush, cocoon-style bed upholstered in soft blue fabric—perfect for cosy nights. The Persian-style rug adds warmth underfoot, while the minimalist desk by the window offers a tranquil spot to work, with views of the surrounding trees.
To maximise storage, we went with a wall-to-wall wardrobe, which keeps the room clutter-free without sacrificing space. Once the lighting, shutters, and seating are in place, this room will be the perfect peaceful retreat. I’m so excited to see it all come together.
What’s Next?
While we’re so close to the finish line, a few exciting projects still await. The garden and terrace will be the final outdoor escape, and I can’t wait to share more about the plans for this space soon. Additionally, a bathroom update is in the works to make sure the cottage is as functional and comfortable as possible.
So watch this space for the full reveal, initial sketches and more before and after pictures in the next installment.
I’d love to hear your thoughts! Should I go for a funky stork wall light or keep things more classic with a chandelier? What do you think of the colour themes? Your suggestions are always welcome!
Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to completion—exciting things are ahead!
Until next time,
Bianca from Grace & Holmes
