Burgh Island: A Timeless Gem That Continues to Shine
A look back and some good news
The landscape is breathtaking in itself
As a passionate lover of classic interiors and all things elegant, few places in the world have captured my heart quite like Burgh Island. My visit to this iconic island last year was truly unforgettable. Steeped in history and rich with a distinctive charm, Burgh Island is a place where time stands still, offering an enchanting blend of Art Deco splendor and a sense of mystery that echoes the spirit of one of its most famous guests—Agatha Christie.
This legendary island holds a special place in my heart, not only for its stunning architecture and breathtaking views but also for its deep connection to the world of literature. Agatha Christie, the queen of mystery, found inspiration here, and it's easy to see why. The island’s hotel served as the setting for her famous novel *Evil Under the Sun,* and it’s said that Christie wrote parts of *And Then There Were None* while staying on the island. Walking through the hotel’s elegant corridors, you can almost feel the presence of her characters, brought to life in a setting that is as intriguing as the stories she penned.
Our mode of transportation to the island was the beach tractor. Great fun. Alternatively on foot by low tide or swim!
It’s no wonder that Burgh Island has a timeless appeal. With its striking Art Deco design, which has been lovingly preserved, and its unique position on a tidal island that feels wonderfully secluded, it’s a haven for those who appreciate the finer things in life—design, history, and a touch of mystery.
Our first glimpse of the hotel
A picturesque pub and blue skies await us
So, you can imagine my excitement when I learned that Burgh Island, which was put on the market about a year ago, is now officially off the market. The owners, who have cared for this remarkable place over the past six years, ultimately decided they couldn’t part with it, despite receiving offers. This decision is a testament to the enduring allure of Burgh Island and the importance of preserving its legacy.
I can understand why Agatha Chrisitie found her Inspiration here
What makes this news even more thrilling is that Giles Fuchs, the owner, has announced plans to invest significantly in the island’s future. The commitment to further enhance the décor and services ensures that Burgh Island will not only retain its historic charm but also offer an elevated experience for guests. For those of us who are passionate about interiors, the prospect of seeing how this iconic location will continue to evolve while staying true to its storied past is incredibly exciting.
Beautiful Art Deco elements everywhere you look
I’m also delighted to share that Kati Latchford, the previous Hotel Manager, has returned to Burgh Island, joining a team that is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the guest experience. Together, they will continue to welcome visitors to this extraordinary place, ensuring that its legacy—and its connection to Agatha Christie—lives on.
No words needed
For those who appreciate the elegance of the past, coupled with the comforts of the present, Burgh Island remains a destination like no other. I’m already looking forward to my next visit, to immerse myself once again in its timeless beauty, and to see how it continues to celebrate both its history and its future.
I could easily spend a few months here just writing, designing and relaxing
Here’s to the enduring charm of Burgh Island and the joy it brings to all who step upon its shores!
